A shared journey of fortitude, reflection, and transformation.
Join us on September 25–27, 2026, as we present Path of Miracles, Joby Talbot’s 2005 semi-staged contemporary choral work tracing the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James. Drawing on medieval texts, Catholic liturgy, and sung in seven languages, the piece weaves global musical influences into a moving meditation.
As Steven Plank writes in his program notes:
In his essay “Walking,” Henry David Thoreau reveals a fondness for the derivation of the verb “to saunter” that roots it in the Holy Land, in la Sainte Terre. A saunterer—a Sainte-Terrer—was one going to the Holy Land on crusade. Thoreau expands this idea to observe that “every walk is a sort of crusade, preached by some Peter the Hermit in us. . . .” The idea of a holy walk inspires the English composer Joby Talbot’s 2005 work, Path of Miracles. In this staged and extravagantly scored choral composition, Talbot and his librettist, the English poet Robert Dickinson, fashion a musical-poetic evocation of the most famous of holy walks, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and bring to life not only the walk—the path—but also its transformational nature.
