Here is a miracle. That we are here is a miracle.

In 812, it is said that a show of otherworldly lights and inexplicable music guided Pelagius the Hermit to find the resting place of St. James, in a stone tomb, in the midst of the Libredón forest, in Galicia, the northwestern most region of present-day Spain. About it, the city of Santiago de Compostela grew as a destination for pilgrims throughout the world to pay homage at the apostle’s shrine.

The paths they traveled were marked by hardship and hunger. But they were hosts to miracles of their own, too: in Villasirga, where pilgrims who had found no healing at Compostela might find it on their return journey; in Cuenca, where St. Julian, the hermit bishop, devoted his life to helping the poor of all faiths; or in the simple kindness of a stranger on the road.

Sometimes the greatest miracle is the one that is ever true, even in the face of the devils on our own paths. In Robert Dickinson’s words, which we’ll sing September 25–27, 2026, “Here is a miracle. That we are here is a miracle.”

I hope you’ll join us on this Path of Miracles.

Gregory Ristow, Artistic Director & Conductor
