Three Renaissance era composers in black and white

A concert featuring the rich, resplendent polyphony of Renaissance France.

La Fleur de la Renaissance ⚜️
We’re wrapping up our season on May 8 & 9 with La Fleur de la Renaissance, a program of rich, resplendent polyphony from Renaissance France. The concert is shaped around a pastiche mass built from several L’Homme armé settings, interwoven with chansons and motets by Josquin des Prez, Clément Janequin, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, and others.

These towering figures shaped the soundscape of the 15th and early 16th centuries—Josquin, hailed as the “master of the notes,” transformed vocal expression with emotional depth and technical brilliance. Janequin was famous for his descriptive programmatic chansons, with vivid vocal pieces mimicking sounds like birds, street cries, and battles. Sweelinck was known as the “Orpheus of Amsterdam,” bridging Renaissance and Baroque music. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear their sublime compositions brought to life—an evening of exquisite harmony, historic beauty, and musical flowering.

Charles Edward McGuire, PhD, from Oberlin College & Conservatory, will present a pre-concert talk 45 minutes prior to each performance.
