MARCH CHORAL MADNESS
March 9-10, 2019
March Choral Madness combined music of Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, and Cleveland composer Andrew Rindfleisch. In addition to several part songs of outlandish beauty by Brahms, the Choir presented Britten’s rarely heard A.M.D.G. (Ad majorem Dei gloriam — To the Greater Glory of God), a cycle of seven poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins. These insanely virtuosic pieces, penned when Britten was only twenty-six years old, contain the broad spectrum from frenzied passion to absolute calm. Rindfleisch’s five pieces likewise cover a vast range of emotion from enraged raving to rhythmically charged playfulness to sublime repose and magnificent beauty.
