March Madrigal Madness saw us employ the format of an elimination tournament, on the “court” of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Recital Hall. The variety of madrigals and chansons covered love in all its forms—playful joy, parting grief, passion, and even bragging about one’s sexual abilities. Italian madrigal teammates Gastoldi, Monteverdi, Banchieri and di Lasso stormed the paint against French chanson opponents Janequin, Garnier, and Josquin. The sixteenth-century English madrigalists defended against their countrymen from the nineteenth century! The audience chose the winner, to great entertainment.
