Matthew Jones
TENOR
Tenor Matthew Jones, originally from Savannah, GA, is celebrated for his dynamic artistry and commitment to expanding the classical canon through innovative programming that centers underrepresented voices. A frequent soloist and collaborator, he actively engages with living composers and initiatives dedicated to cultural relevance and representation.
A versatile performing artist, Matthew has directed several solo and choral projects including “O Black and Unknown Bards,” featuring settings of African American poets by composers Buck McDaniel and Dolores White, at Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project’s Re:Sound New Music Festival. Jones is also a core collaborator with Linking Legacies, a Northeast Ohio–based performing artist initiative spotlighting classical artists, composers, and performers of the African diaspora. His performance repertoire traverses Renaissance, opera, oratorio, art song, contemporary classical, jazz, gospel, and musical theatre. Praised for his “lively agility for dancing and light timbre” in the role of Sportin’ Life (Porgy & Bess), Matthew also sings with professional choral ensembles such as GRAMMY®-winning Apollo’s Fire Baroque Orchestra and Cleveland Chamber Choir. Recently, he joined Sam Smith in his premiere of Gloria on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Jones holds degrees in Music Education and Performance from Cleveland State University School of Music and Georgia Southern University’s Gretsch School of Music, and is currently pursuing a DMA in Voice Performance at Shenandoah Conservatory.
