David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion

On December 20th and 21st, the choir presented David Lang’s Pulitzer-Prize Winning The Little Match Girl Passion, a modern day retelling of the 1845 Hans Christian Andersen story, influenced by Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. This was a captivating, immersive experience, featuring new connective music by award-winning local composer Tom Lopez and a visual arts collaboration with the students of the Cleveland School of the Arts. A selection of holiday works from a variety of choral traditions preceded Lang’s work.
The Little Match Girl Passion invited us to think about those who are in need. This concert was presented in partnership with the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless, aligned with the themes of David Lang’s award-winning work. The concerts were presented with the support of the Cleveland School of the Arts and grants from The Aaron Copland Fund and The Amphion Foundation.
